The Texas Rangers: Vanguard of Anglo Settlement in the Lone Star State

This document collection examines both the causes of state efforts to extend the frontiers of Anglo settlement in late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth century Texas, as well as the consequences of these actions for the nonwhite people who lived there. Students will explore broader questions of racial attitudes, the right to use violence, and the mythic status of the Texas Rangers by analyzing primary sources, an author-provided learning objective, central question, and historical background.
