Cancer affects many areas of an individuals life, making the need for counselling inevitable if the whole person has to be treated. The most common approach in medicine is to treat conditions physically; psychological interventions are rarely incorporated into a patients treatment plan. The counsellor is often approached only after the patient or family members have experienced a crisis situation.
