In 1956, the American Medical Association Board of Trustees created an ad hoc committee on Medical Rating of Physical Impairment to establish a series of practical guidelines of the rating of physical impairment of the various organ systems. ]Since then, the AMA Guides® have provided a reference framework within which physicians may evaluate and report medical impairments.
